26 Jun 2018 Brisbane Auto Mall

iEDM were approached by Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) and ML Design to provide circuit design advice for the concept of an Auto Mall to be built adjacent to Brisbane’s International Airport. iEDM, along with Mark Skaife have been providing circuit design services and advice to BAC since 2015 during the design process of this major development and first of it’s kind in Australia. The test track will be located within the development of an automotive precinct and offers a safe environment for driver training, education programs, car club activities and most significantly for the Brands that will occupy these facilities, access to a circuit direct from the showroom. The location of the AutoMall places automotive brands in an area that prospective purchasers can fly in, test a car on track and fly back the same day. This is a strategy which is anticipated to be successful for high-end manufacturers, whose customers want to test the cars at speed, under brakes and into corners – an experience you cannot get test driving through a city. The facility also allows retailers to continually engage with their customers through driving experiences and training. iEDM is proud to be a part of this innovative and groundbreaking...

20 Dec 2017 Newcastle 500 Supercars

The inaugural Newcastle 500 was held in November 2017 and was hailed a major success for the Sport and the City. iEDM were engaged by Supercars Australia to provide all site identification, feasibility, design, engineering and project management services for the project, which included substantial civil / enabling works as well as the overlay and event planning. The Newcastle Event site was located on the edge of the CBD, encompassed many businesses, around 3,000 residents, 3 public beaches, parklands and various other public areas. Logistically, these projects require a very high level of planning, stakeholder communication and design. Initially, the civil works were only to include minimal works required to make the streets safe for Supercars racing. However, it was soon realised that the project could achieve a tremendous legacy to the area of Newcastle East if we could conduct significant streetscape and services upgrades into the area at the same time. The services in Newcastle East were dilapidated and some water mains close to 100 years old. The project was able to deliver upgrades to water, stormwater, electrical infrastructure, as well as new footpaths, roads, smart infrastructure and landscaping. iEDM had only 12 months to design, plan and deliver around $25M of major CBD...

02 Dec 2015 Pukekohe Park Raceway Upgrades

iEDM was approached by V8SC to assist with the development of a strategy to take the temporary infrastructure from the Hamilton Street Circuit to create a cost effective upgrade to the Pukekohe Park Raceway. The upgrades were to provide: Safety imrovements; Racing improvements; Rejuvinate the pit and paddock area to make a more functional space; New race control, administration and officials building; and Viewing and accessibility improvements. With a limited budget and a tight timeframe, iEDM needed to take very tight control of the deliverables and the overall project. In order to gain the Government funding approval, iEDM guaranteed the price of the project and worked with all stakeholders to make the project a success. Working with our clients and our specialist sub-consultants, we were able to develop a design which created a fresh aesthetic and exciting racing on a circuit where heritage also needed to be retained. iEDM placed a team in Auckland for the duration of the detailed design and delivery stage. Our team procured all items and acted as construction managers. The most pleasing and successful element of the upgrades was the addition of two new corners on the back straight. High speeds along the existing back straight, combined with a fixed runoff meant that we needed...

iEDM has developed a concept design for a proposed street circuit around the 2012 London Olympic site. In 2011, iEDM developed a concept design for a proposed street circuit around the 2012 London Olympic site. The aim of any street circuit is to provide a challenging motorsport venue that showcases the visual imagery of the host city and what better place to showcase modern London than the innovative new Olympic precinct? With its strategic location, pre-installed events amenities and state of the art transport facilities it would serve as a fantastic venue for any racing format. 2012 London Olympic Precinct - Original Street Circuit Concept by iEDM from Howler + iEDM on Vimeo. iEDM recognise the benefits of creating effective legacy for infrastructure and new expertise post the hosting of mega-events and wanted to highlight what we thought was a great opportunity for London. We have the experience in delivering these major street circuit events and know first-hand the benefits they provide the community. It was not made to showcase a fully realised final track design, but rather was created to show how the concept could work and look against the backdrop of a great Olympic precinct in one of the world’s great...

02 Dec 2015 Gold Coast 600 V8 Supercars

The Vodafone is the new name for the freshly re-branded and formatted event which many would know as the Gold Coast Indy. Members of the iEDM team have been involved with the engineering design and project management of the Gold Coast Indy since the event’s inception in 1990. In 2010, the famous 4.5km beachside street circuit was reduced in length to allow for a faster construction period and better racing for the V8 Supercars, who are now the main category of race cars and the event promoter. The event also incorporates a concert at the Broadwater Parklands. The reduction of the circuit resulted in a 30% reduction in construction time. Further, the reduction, with a detailed review on construction methodology, has resulted in approximately $1M of annual savings to the event. The Gold Coast 600 is one of the most logistically challenging events to construct on the Australian calendar. The site cannot close down, for any period of the construction, with approximately 4,000 residents inside the precinct and located on one of three major arterial roads in a city of over 500,000 people. Strong community communication and a key understanding of the uses of the site is of major importance when planning this project. The...
