02 Dec 2015 Gold Coast 600 V8 Supercars

The Vodafone is the new name for the freshly re-branded and formatted event which many would know as the Gold Coast Indy. Members of the iEDM team have been involved with the engineering design and project management of the Gold Coast Indy since the event’s inception in 1990. In 2010, the famous 4.5km beachside street circuit was reduced in length to allow for a faster construction period and better racing for the V8 Supercars, who are now the main category of race cars and the event promoter. The event also incorporates a concert at the Broadwater Parklands. The reduction of the circuit resulted in a 30% reduction in construction time. Further, the reduction, with a detailed review on construction methodology, has resulted in approximately $1M of annual savings to the event. The Gold Coast 600 is one of the most logistically challenging events to construct on the Australian calendar. The site cannot close down, for any period of the construction, with approximately 4,000 residents inside the precinct and located on one of three major arterial roads in a city of over 500,000 people. iEDM had various engagements in the lead up to and during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, working for the Organising Corporation, Gold Coast City Council, the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning and assisting Contractors to deliver overlay scope. We were engaged by Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) between 2014 and 2018 to provide Event Engineering Project Management Panel Services. During this time, iEDM  developed a detailed knowledge of the project and importantly, the venues and overlay design requirements. Over the course of the 4 year project, iEDM delivered some of the following projects: Venue Baseline Services Engineering Audits; Various Overlay Strategy Documents; Feasibility Study for a Temporary Roof over the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre; Acted as GOLDOC rep for the Feasibility Study into the Metricon Stadium Northern Stand; Seconded staff into GOLDOC Venue, Delivery and Overlay team (VDO); Delivered the first test event - the 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships at Gold Coast Aquatic Centre; Live Sites Overlay and Feasibility Study; Commonwealth House initial Feasibility Study; and, Seconded approximately 6 staff with Moreton Hire for the delivery of approximately 45,000 square metres of temporary structure, HVAC and sub-structure. Over four days of motorsport and concerts, the 500 Adelaide is one of Australia's largest annual events. iEDM deliver approximately $17M of overlay infrastructure for this major South Australian Project, on behalf of the South Australian Tourism Commission. In 2010, V8 Supercars introduced a 3 day concert to the program of the Gold Coast 600, called 600 Sounds. iEDM was commissioned by Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) to provide all design and project management for the 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships (PPSC). The PPSC was the first test event for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the first event to be held at the recently upgraded Gold Coast Aquatic Centre. At the time iEDM was appointed, there was an approximate $1.0M budget over-run of money approved by the funding parties and the budget provided by their cost consultant. Our first significant task was to develop a cost efficient design and drive the procurement of the major infrastructure items to the funded budget. We were able to achieve this using well designed, high quality, local products and were able to report to our client success in committing the budget from $2.5M to $1.5M. iEDM was responsible for the project management, programming, planning, design and engineering for the following temporary overlay infrastructure: Grandstands; Corporate Facilities; Electrical and Generation; Plumbing and Fire; Super Screens and Scoreboards; Furniture, TV’s and Hire Equipment; Tents / Structures; Provisioning for 3rd party suppliers eg Catering and Broadcast; Gate Infrastructure; Telecommunications; and, Portable Buildings and Toilets.
