CONCEPT Bathurst Second Circuit

OVERVIEW

iEDM, in collaboration with Skaife Racing, developed the below concept as part of a bid to design a second circuit on the southern side of the infamous Mount Panorama.

Our driver-led design team on this project consisted of Australian Motor Sport legends – Mark Skaife, a 5 x Bathurst 1000 winner and Mick Doohan, 5 x 500cc Moto GP World Champion. While the design was only in conceptual stage for the bid, iEDM and Skaife Racing placed the following key design objectives into our bid for the project:

  • Create an interesting, challenging and dynamic driving user experience for both motor cycles and cars;
  • Create a product which reflects and meets the existing, exceptional motor sport reputation of Bathurst and provides further economic development opportunities for BRC, including capability to host Major Events;
  • Collaborate strongly with local user groups and key stakeholders to ensure the venue was fit for purpose;
  • Design a venue with sustainability and affordability in mind, within the budget and with the ability to be expanded with future demand; and,
  • Use iEDM’s broader major event and property development skills to engage with potential major event promoters to create some real anchor events for the venue to ensure its long term success.

The undulated topography of the site presented a major opportunity to create a circuit with rise and fall to replicate some of the world’s great circuits. However, there are also some environmental constraints in the form of an existing water course, an above ground high voltage power pole easement and of course a budget which ultimately restricts the amount of physical earthworks and construction.

Our approach represented world’s best practice, using highly respected, Australian driving talent to ensure high level racing outcomes and balancing the development with best practice engineering, to ensure sustainable, constructible and affordable outcomes for the BRC.

A visual simulation of the concept can be seen below.
