2022 FINA World Championships (25m)

OVERVIEW

In 2022, the 16th FINA World Championships (25m) were held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC).

This prestigious international event required extensive temporary infrastructure and logistics solutions to accommodate athletes, media, and spectators. As the official overlay delivery partner, iEDM was tasked with transforming the venue to meet the event's high standards and ensuring a seamless experience for all participants.

Objectives

  • To enhance the seating capacity of MSAC to accommodate close to 4500 spectators.
  • To provide state-of-the-art facilities for athletes, media, and spectators.
  • To ensure the venue met all safety and compliance standards.

Challenges

Seating Adjustments:

  • The permanent grandstand's capacity was reduced from 2892 to 2417 due to the installation of media tribunes, camera platforms, and a broadcast platform.
  • An additional temporary grandstand was constructed on the eastern side of the pool, accommodating 2016 spectators, including 368 seats for coaches and athletes.
  • Structural challenges included careful weight loading within a small training pool, removal and levelling of a garden bed, and ensuring safe access for spectators.

Additional Infrastructure:

  • A 26m long, 10m high video wall was installed to serve as a large screen for spectators and a backdrop for medal ceremonies, designed to allow athlete access to the podium.
  • A 25m long photographer extension platform was constructed in the middle of the pool for officials and photographers.
  • Four temporary broadcast camera platforms and bespoke media tribunes for 36 operational staff, press, and commentators were installed.
  • The broadcast compound was located within a live road, requiring coordination of alternate routes for public access and emergency pathways.
  • The fan zone featured a 15m x 15m marquee for accreditation, security, and volunteer activities, along with food trucks, toilets, and activation marquees. Temporary flooring ensured pedestrian access despite fencing and other obstructions.

Internal Spaces:

  • Internal rooms were upgraded with temporary walling, additional furniture, fridges, and TVs to meet international event standards.

Solutions

Design and Implementation:

  • Detailed design and QA of all drawings ensured precise execution.
  • Procurement and budget management were handled efficiently to meet project requirements.

Site Management:

  • Comprehensive site management ensured smooth operations throughout the event.
  • Rigorous site safety protocols were followed to protect all stakeholders.
