Pukekohe Park Raceway Upgrades

OVERVIEW

iEDM was approached by V8SC to assist with the development of a strategy to take the temporary infrastructure from the Hamilton Street Circuit to create a cost effective upgrade to the Pukekohe Park Raceway.

The upgrades were to provide:

  • Safety improvements;
  • Racing improvements;
  • Rejuvenate the pit and paddock area to make a more functional space;
  • New race control, administration and officials building; and
  • Viewing and accessibility improvements.

With a limited budget and a tight timeframe, iEDM needed to take very tight control of the deliverables and the overall project. In order to gain the Government funding approval, iEDM guaranteed the price of the project and worked with all stakeholders to make the project a success.

Working with our clients and our specialist sub-consultants, we were able to develop a design which created a fresh aesthetic and exciting racing on a circuit where heritage also needed to be retained.

iEDM placed a team in Auckland for the duration of the detailed design and delivery stage. Our team procured all items and acted as construction managers.

The most pleasing and successful element of the upgrades was the addition of two new corners on the back straight. High speeds along the existing back straight, combined with a fixed runoff meant that we needed to create a race feature to slow speeds at this entry. Together with Mark Skaife, we designed two new corners into the back straight, with the dual objectives to slow speed at the entry to the hairpin as well as create a further passing opportunity.

The two corners were hailed as a success by various V8 Supercar drivers and added another viewing and entertainment area to the circuit.
